| Built in 1965, Station #53 serves the Casa View area. This three bay station
contains 7,810 square feet. The most memorable fires Engine 53 answered occurred at the King Edward Apartments, 2707 North Buckner Blvd. Firefighters at #53 claim they can recite the box (1383) and address in their sleep, since there have been several multiple alarms at this wood shingle roofed apartment complex. Despite the numerous fires there, only one fatality has resulted. On January 11, 1985, at 9:53 a.m., a two alarm incident caused the death of a small boy who had been overcome by smoke. An adult woman jumped from a second story window and received moderate injuries. She was admitted to the hospital where she was treated and released several days later. The cause of the fire was children playing with matches; loss $94,000. Station #53 firefighters occasionally see their "good work" pay off. Such is the story of "The Bread Lady." An elderly lady living in a trailer park, off Highland Road, called the DFD one day to report a fire in her home. Within minutes, Engine 53 arrived to find this woman screaming and throwing her belongings from a window. Firefighters entered the building and extinguished a small fire in the water heater closet. The woman was so grateful that each week she brings bread, crackers, donuts and other such items to her "heroes." Another woman delivered a cake to the B shift after they attended her in a medical emergency. The cake was decorated with the words: "Thanks, for my life!" Firefighters not only pride themselves in their work, but also their surroundings. With the help of Steve Goode, B shift, a former nurseryman, the Station #53 crew has planted shrubs and an oak tree and boasts of the finest looking lawn at any fire station in Dallas. Another unique addition to the landscaping was the planting of the Texas state flower, the bluebonnet. Captain "Buz" Craft, B shift, planted the bluebonnet seeds in recognition of the Texas Sesquicentennial in 1986. Although the seeds have not yet produced flowers, Captain Craft is optimistic. |
